Hooray for Victoria! We’ve been having a really awesome time out here, and the show has been getting some really exciting response. Opening night was packed, and we’ve got another show tonight, and our last one is tomorrow. And here’s what the Times-Colonist had to say about it:
“A personal, funny and moving show… Walker’s script is well observed, unflinching, and honest.”
You can see the full review here. There’s also a great interview that’s come out this week in Monday Mag. It also features Eric Davis of Red Bastard fame.
After the show tonight, Johnnie will be participating in an event called the Monobrow! Monologue Slam, in which he will be competing with several other performers each performing original 3-minute monologues without props, costumes, or tech cues. Wish him luck!

For those of you wanting just a wee preview of our summer shows MAUDE-LYNNE SELLS OUT! and Redheaded Stepchild, come to the Berkeley Street Theatre tomorrow afternoon for the Festival of Ideas & Creation!
If you head over to the Props Room (a super cool space jam-packed with weird stuff) at either 3:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m., you can catch Morgan performing an excerpt from MAUDE-LYNNE. Kate Bush-inspired dancing may or may not be involved.
Meanwhile, if you head to the Rehearsal Hall at 6:45 p.m., you can see Johnnie do an excerpt from Redheaded Stepchild. Rita Hayworth-inspired dancing may or may not be involved.
These presentations are the culmination of our GYM Team residency at the Canadian Stage, which has been pretty neat. Also, there’s a bunch of other performances happening at Berkeley Street this weekend as part of the festival, and you should totally check them out. I think there’s hotdogs!

We are absolutely thrilled to be heading to Victoria, BC next week to participate in Intrepid Theatre‘s Uno Fest! It’s a really neat festival of solo shows, and we’ll be premiering our new show Redheaded Stepchild over there. This year’s festival features shows by Bob Wiseman, Red Bastard, Chris Gibbs, Theatre SKAM, and a whole bunch of other cool people. Can’t wait!
Check out this neat interview at Plank Magazine with Intrepid Theatre’s Artistic Director Janet Munsil, who has some really great stuff to say about our show:
Plank: Are there any other performers and shows that could be considered “sleepers?”
Janet: Johnnie Walker’s Redheaded Stepchild, from Toronto. He’s been getting lots of visibility there recently, but this is the first time he’s been to the West Coast. It’s a world premiere, which is pretty unusual for Uno – and then he’ll be doing it at Summerworks. I met Johnnie at Banff last winter when we were both in Daniel McIvor’s playwrighting workshop, where he was working on a monologue for himself. The writing was really outstanding, and even though he was just reading it, you could tell he’d be great. I invited him on the spot. I don’t think he knew I curated a solo festival, and that he’d just done a three-day audition.
P.S. You should also have a peek at
this interview that Intrepid Theatre did with Johnnie, it’s pretty neat!
