Have You Read the Reviews?
July 6, 2010
Fringe has been going fabulously for old Maude-Lynne, and we’re happy to report some really exciting reviews.
From NOW Magazine:
“NNNN + Critic’s Pick
Deep in her “beloved withering depths” (read basement), Brontë sisters enthusiast Maude-Lynne prepares to auction off her treasures, while semi-boyfriend Colin provides the necessary musical accompaniment.
The auction set-up is delightful, and writer/performer Morgan Norwich is impeccably droll as Maude-Lynne, enunciating her latest tweets with the clarity of a 19th-century governess…
Peter Cavell’s Colin is a sweetly slow foil for Maude-Lynne’s campiness, providing choice one-liners and the occasional Kate Bush keyboard sting. Not a single line or gesture is wasted under Johnnie Walker’s direction.”
From Eye Weekly:
“★★★★
Morgan Norwich is both magnetic and gut-busting as Maude-Lynne, a reclusive retro-fetishist who sells bootleg movies and Victorian literature from her mom’s basement to make ends meet. An enigma, she speaks with a 19th century parlance but has her Tweets relayed to her on a futuristic headset, and pines for a Wuthering Heights-style romance yet dates a keyboard-playing comic book dork (Peter Cavell). A quirky, wit-laden script provides a solid backbone for this show, while Norwich brings it to uproarious life with her geeky grandiosity, sharp ad-libbing, and eventual character unraveling, which rivals Robert Downey Jr.’s in Tropic Thunder.”
We thought she was more like Robert Downey Jr. in Tuff Turf, but a compliment is a compliment.
UPDATE: NOW Magazine has now published their annual Fringe Highlights column, and Maude-Lynne is mentioned three times! Outstanding New Play, Outstanding Production, and Outstanding Ensemble. Nobody’s Business Theatre sincerely thanks everyone who came out and made our show such a success. And to those who couldn’t make it, well, we’ll just have to see you next time!
